Hey, Listen! Check This Lady Out: Lowell
If you’re into a super rad lady busting out techno pop, you should probably give Lowell a listen! This girl is basically the definition of the word fierce, and her music reflects her incredible style. Not one to stick to conventions of any kind, Lowell is blazing her own trail, both with her music and strong feminist presence.

Loving Lux Spa!
Last Friday I was lucky enough to brighten up my gross, rainy morning by getting a glorious manicure at the absolutely adorable Lux Spa in Yorkville!
As soon as I walked in I was excited: the spa is in an amazing area of Yorkville, and couldn’t be cuter inside. I’m obsessed with their sea foam teal colour coordination, gorgeous décor, and impressive selection of nail colours on display.

Hey, Listen! Check These Guys Out: Entourage Music Group
I was recently tipped off to give Entourage Music Group, a Toronto-based hip-hop group, a listen, and I couldn’t be more thankful. After putting their album Past, Present, Future into my Xbox on shuffle (I mean, who has a CD player anymore? Am I right?), the first track that came on was Victory, and I was floored. My first thought: the female vocalist, Quota, immediately reminded me of Imogen Heap, a techno pop singer with an incredibly distinct voice. Quota not only has a killer voice, but it’s completely unique: certainly not the run-of-the-mill hip-hop female range. This lady is badass, and has the vocal chords to prove it.

Hey, Listen! Check These Guys Out: July Talk
One of my absolute favourite bands at the moment is a Toronto-based group called July Talk. Their full length, self-titled album was released in October 2013, and I have to say, it’s ridiculously fantastic. I become such a proud Torontonian when I have a band that’s constantly on repeat who hails from my home town. But July Talk isn’t impressive only due to their outrageous talent. These guys have been taking North America by storm, and are showing no signs of slowing down.

NCLA Nail Wraps: A Girl’s Best Friend!
Last night I had an extremely girly evening, thanks to my best friend, a bottle of wine, Sex and the City, and my NCLA Nail Wraps! Each wrap design was created by celebrity nail stylists: you can rock nails just like Miley Cyrus, Vanessa Hudgens and Drew Barrymore. Not to mention the brand has been featured in such iconic fashion mags as Glamour, Instyle, Harper’s Bazaar, Nylon (I could go on…). Yeah, they’re kind of a big deal.

Hey Listen! Check These Guys Out: Dwayne Gretzky
I had never seen The Horseshoe as packed as I did a few Fridays ago, when I caught the incredible superband Dwayne Grestzky. Now, when I say “packed”, I mean wall to wall, every last person who was able to get into the room was in the room. Nothing beats watching an awesome band: unless you’re watching an awesome band in a buzzing, sweaty room.

Hey, Listen! Check These Guys Out: The Balconies
I’m always thrilled to feature bands with a kick-ass front woman! The Balconies are a sick three-piece who seem to be taking the world by storm. This band is getting some serious exposure, not only in the Toronto music scene, but are also rocking out all across North America and Europe. They’ve hit the stage with a pretty impressive roster, including Mother Mother, Bad Religion, the Sam Roberts Band and Tokyo Police Club, just to name a few.

Hey Listen! Check These Guys Out: The Strumbellas
This week I’m bringing you a very special edition of Hey, Listen! Readers, meet The Strumbellas. Strumbellas, readers. It’s important you become acquainted with this band, because you’ll want to say you listened to them before they completely blew up (even though they’re kind of already there, so we all need to get it together!). This Toronto-based band formed in 2008, and I’m almost positive they have not had time to breathe since they began. They’ve been very very busy!

#GlamGossip – Rainbow Bright, Baby!
This Spring’s makeup trend will be bold, bright pops of colour, and I couldn’t be more excited about it! Gone are the days of the no-makeup-makeup-look (at least for a little while), and we’re going back to what it’s all about: attention grabbing, traffic stopping colours on our lips and eyes. Not at the same time, of course…

Best and Worst Celebrity Eyebrows
Anyone who knows me knows I’m ridiculously obsessed with my eyebrows (as well as everyone else’s). In 2014 there is no excuse for bad brows, and some of these celebrities should know better! Here are some ladies you should be taking your eyebrow cues from (and some others that you shouldn’t!)

Hey, Listen! Check These Guys Out: The Maysides
If you enjoyed my Hey, Listen from a few weeks ago about Cheap Date, listen up! This week we’re listening to The Maysides, a Hamilton based band who tour all over Southern Ontario with their unique brand of pop punk. Managing to break the stereotype that all pop punk bands produce the same music, The Maysides are a distinctive mix of Boxcar Racer, Taking Back Sunday and Brand New (their first/best album, anyway), which trust me, is an excellent mix! If you liked Cheap Date but are looking for a slightly more accessible version, you definitely need to check these guys out. Their range of songs will please everyone, with both party anthems like “Kegger” and mellower tracks like “Time Machine”.

#GlamGossip – Pastel Hair
I’m thrilled that one of my favourite trends of 2013 is making its way into 2014 with a bang! Pastel hair, or My Little Pony hair as I call it, was seen all over the runways, red carpets and Tumblr accounts of 2013, and it’s showing no signs of slowing down. If you’re thinking of trying out this daring trend, here’s some inspiration!

Hey, Listen! Check These Guys Out: For Esmé
One late night during Indie Week in October 2012, I was dragged out of my apartment and taken to a show where a solo artist named Martha Meredith was playing, and I am so grateful for that. Martha’s latest project is an incredible band called For Esmé, and one listen to their self-titled album demonstrates how much of a powerhouse this girl is! Manning both the keys and the lead vocals, Martha also pens the music and lyrics. It’s so wonderful to see a band with such a rad front woman, who is both talented and beautiful.

Hey, Listen! Check These Guys Out: Cheap Date
This past weekend I took a little trip back to my high school days, in the best way possible. Cheap Date, an Oshawa based band, played at Rancho Relaxo last Friday, and they put on more of a party than a show. Playing to a packed house, this five-piece pop-punk band created an atmosphere that is unfortunately generally dismissed by most bands these days. Not only are these guys awesome musicians, but they’re the type of people you’d want to drink with. Their party anthem, loyally titled PBR, reminds me of Taking Back Sunday in their glory days. Cheap Date makes music that is not only super catchy (I find myself humming their songs around the house), but it’s the type of music you’ll want to blast at a party.

Hey, Listen! Check These Guys Out: Xprime
What would happen if The Beatles, The Beach Boys and Mumford and Sons had a weird love-triangle baby? It would more than likely produce the four-piece Niagara-based super-band that is Xprime. The first time I heard these guys was Indie Week in October 2012, and I had to pick my jaw up off the floor. Never before had I beenthat stoked on an up-and-coming band. Not only are they devastatingly gorgeous (hey, it doesn’t hurt), but all four of them sing, can play every instrument (they often switch off during a set like it’s no big deal) and nail ridiculous harmonies not only live, but a cappella. What hooked me was their dead-on cover of I Believe In A Thing Called Love by The Darkness, but I then discovered that their original stuff is amazing too (which is rare for a band that hooks you with a cover).
